18th Anniversary

Today is the anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death. I've made birthday and death memorial posts for Kurt before, and this time instead of me going on about him, I picked some quotes I like regarding Kurt from other people. If you are really interested in what a random person who never knew him but just admires him thinks, you can click on the Kurt Cobain label and read what I have to say.

"He had a touch most guitarists would kill for."- Chuck Berry

"I still dream about Kurt. Every time I see him in a dream, I’ll be amazed and I get this feeling that everyone else thinks he’s dead. It always feels totally real, probably because I’m a very vivid dreamer. But, in my dreams, Kurt’s usually been hiding - we’ll get together and I’ll end up asking him, ‘God, where have you been?’"- Dave Grohl

"Kurt chewed bubblegum in his soul."- Courtney Love

"I remember Kurt for what he was, caring, generous and sweet." - Krist Novoselic

"He was a genius."- Paul McCartney

"He respected her a lot. And he really adored her [Kim Gordon]. I knew Kurt, but it wasn’t that intimate a relationship. I mean, we spent a lot of time together when we were on tour and we kept connected, but I think [his death] was a lot more emotional for her. My thing with Kurt was a couple of goofy guys jumping around with each other, whereas they had something deeper. I remember having to make that phone call to Kim. She was doing a photo shoot or something. And she was pregnant, and it was heavy - it was very, very heavy."- Thurston Moore

"I think Kurt was one of the deepest thinkers we've had in popular music over the last 20 years and if anyone deserves to have his songs dwelled upon it's him."- Jim Sclavunos

" For such a quiet person, he was so excited about having a child."- Layne Staley

"You know, I always thought I'd go first. I don't know why I thought that, it just seemed like I would. I mean, I didn't know him on a daily basis - far from it. But, in a way, I don't even feel right being here without him. It's so difficult to really believe he's gone. I still talk about him like he's still here, you know. I can't figure it out. It doesn't make any sense."- Eddie Vedder

"I mourn for Kurt. A once beautiful, then pathetic, lost and heroically stupid boy."- Pete Townshed

"He really, really inspired me. He was so great. Wonderful. One of the best, but more than that. Kurt was one of the absolute best of all time for me." - Neil Young

Rabid Love

Rabid Love- Colleen Green

Sorry I have not been blogging as much as I usually do. The past few days have been really busy, then my library got all messed up some how.... More to come....! This song is great, but the album art, which is shown above is my obsession.

Just Like Heaven

Just Like Heaven- The Cure

Yes, everyone knows this song, I mean, how could you not? It's a complete classic. Well, today is my birthday and although it's a bit cliché to say your favorite song by The Cure is 'Just Like Heaven', but what can I say? I might be a bit of a cliché... It, in my opinion is the most perfect pop song in the history of all pop songs that I am aware of. I could really listen to this song all day, everyday if I let myself. I am not sure why, but there is one part in this song that stands out to me in particular. When Robert Smith says:
I  found myself alone,
Alone,
Alone above the raging sea,
That stole the only girl I loved and drowned her deep inside of me.

It really resonates with me, always has since I first listened to 'Just Like Heaven'. I really do love the lyrics, but there is something about the way Robert Smith says it that I just love with every bit of me.

Overkill

Overkill- Gauntlet Hair

The sound combination or "noise" in this song really draws you in. It starts out with a sort of electronic vibe, then progresses to being more "noise".

Norgaard

Norgaard- The Vaccines

I love this song. It's really fun and has such a positive, great vibe. I also like the imagery in these lyrics a lot.

Hey Suzanne

Hey Suzanne- Velociraptor

I do not know too much by this band, but all that I do know by them, I like a lot.

Insufficient Fare

Insufficient Fare- Cerebral Ballzy

I've heard so much, so much hype regarding this band over the past few months, and I finally heard this song by them. It's two minute song, that is just filled with the maximum amount of energy along with aggression from start to finish.

Emily's Heart

Emily's Heart- Jamie T

I went through a phase over this past summer where I just was so obsessed with all Jamie T's music, and the past couple of months have been the second wave. I have not been listening to solely Jamie T, but Panic Prevention and Kings & Queens have been on play a lot recently. His albums contain so many different genres, but still all tie into each other. This song is very beautiful, and when I first heard it last summer, I didn't love it too much, but after the fifth play I remember thinking, wow how could anyone hate this song? My curiosity is currently turned to where Jamie T is/where has he been! I really hope he emerges from wherever and comes out with a new album soon, his music is some of my favorite that has been released in the past decade.

Sorry Again, Mate

Sorry Again, Mate- Field Music

This song is respectably weird and quirky compared to the other songs I've heard in my life time. It has the good attributes of those qualities, it is very refreshing, artsy, and overall, new sounding. This song is from their latest album, Plumb.

Believer

Believer- John Maus

I do like his song 'Hey Moon' better, but as the song progresses, it grows on me more and more. It also grows on me the more I listen to it.

Love Me Two Times

Love Me Two Times- The Doors

I was watching the movie, The Doors, where it basically just told the story of The Doors. I really liked it, it's long, and for someone with a short attention span, I often have difficulty sitting through long movies, but to my dismay, I didn't have trouble with this one. I think it was partially to the great music and it was regarding one of my favorite bands of all time. My dad thinks the actor in the film who played Jim Morrison had an uncanny resemblance to the real Jim Morrison. I think it was just the hair, the clothes, and the beauty mark, but if you took that all away, he would not look like Jim Morrison at all.

Pythagorean Fearem

Pythagorean Fearem- Howler

This song is amazing, and I think that their enitre debut it great along with their EP This One's Different. I was reading something on the band where they stated their EP is much more pop than their album and it's very noticeably so. I mean it seems like two very, almost opposite versions of the same band. I find a lot of their lyrics to be pretty humorous and interesting, sometimes witty. I am sort of annoyed, because I would really love to see them live, but they are playing an 18+ gig. I don't really understand why bands do that to be honest. I understand if it's 21+ if a band is playing at a bar or something, but 18+ seems like an odd age restriction for seeing a band. It's little annoying for people in my age group (16, 17) because we are almost "old enough", but still too young.

Dye The World

Dye The World- Smith Westerns

I am sorry for the typically awful youtube concert quality footage; it does not do this song justice at all.

Freak Scene

Freak Scene- Dinosaur Jr.

I think this song is awesome on all accounts. I didn't really start listening to Dinosaur Jr. until I saw 1991: The Year Punk Broke. I had heard of them, but never gave them a listen until I saw their performance of 'Freak Scene' in the film. They play it a little fast, but besides that it sounds nearly exact to the version that came out on their record, Bug.

Magic Chords

Magic Chords- Sharon Van Etten

This song is a bit bluesy and R&B, but at the same time very catchy and reminds me of pop music. it has a very full and rich sound. I personally love it.

You Take Time

You Take Time- Bleached

If you like Bleeding Knees Club, I think Bleached will appeal to you as well. Bleached, their music is less upbeat and energetic but, putting aside energy level, I think that the two bands have a very similar sound.

Far Away

Far Away- Washed Out

Pull My Heart Away

Pull My Heart Away- Jack Penate

This is a good pop song. I think pop music gets a bad reputation, particularly among indie music lovers because an overwhelming amount of pop music is associated with the mainstream. A lot of my friends that like small bands, are so anti all pop music, which I think is stupid. I think a lot of people are too caught up in the "oh should we like this?" type mentality, like what you like to listen to! Please stop being so snobbish. Well, moving on from my lecture, this song is a fun song to listen to that I fully enjoy. It's pop music, which does appeal to me, I just do not blog about it much, but I think this song can appeal to most people regardless the genre, you like, if you just let yourself like it. It's a fun song and it just overall a nice song to listen to. Also, Jamie xx did a remix of this song, which I like a lot, it is a very interesting take on the song. It is equally as awesome as the original song, just a different type of awesome.
